What Twitter was most excited about during the Emmy Awards

It’s 2015, which means it’s nearly impossible to watch an awards show without also tweeting about it, and the Emmys were no different.

Data compiled by social analytics company Crimson Hexagon reveals there were 811,789 tweets sent Sunday mentioning the Emmy Awards, including ones with the hashtags #Emmys or #Emmys2015 — a big jump from last year’s Emmys telecast, which aired on a Monday and garnered 610,000 tweets. (By comparison, there were more than 4.9 million tweets about the Oscars when those took place back in February.)

The most-mentioned Twitter handle of the evening belonged to Viola Davis, who made history Sunday with her win for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. More than 25,000 tweets about the Emmys included the How to Get Away with Murder star’s Twitter handle. Overall, seven of the 10 most-mentioned Twitter handles belonged to women — including fellow Emmy winners Amy Schumer, Uzo Aduba, and Regina King.

The only male star to make that top-10 most-mentioned list was Andy Samberg. The chart below reveals some of the most-talked-about moments from his hosting stint, including the opening number and handing out his HBO Now login information (which was, at least for a bit, a functioning account). Overall, according to audience data determined via Crimson Hexagon’s Affinities tool, Emmys and Oscars audiences are both interested in topics like fashion and beauty, celebrity news, and health, but those tweeting about the Emmys are apparently four times more likely to be interested in feminism than those tweeting about this year’s Oscars.

Also, 81 percent of those posting Emmy Awards tweets were estimated to be 35 or older, 58 percent were female, and the most popular locations for people tweeting about the awards included New York, California, and Washington, D.C., based on posts per capita.

See below for the most retweeted Emmys posts of the night, including an Orange is the New Black reunion for Daya and Bennett (a.k.a. Matt McGorry and Dascha Polanco).
